Led by PATNUC, the alliance between technological innovation and traditional know-how removes structural barriers and paves the way for more productive and resilient agriculture.

At the crossroads of agricultural traditions and the promises of the modern era, Cameroonian agriculture is poised to write a groundbreaking new chapter in its history. While the sector employs nearly sixty percent of the population, rural stakeholders have long struggled against structural barriers limiting their access to markets, information, and effective tools. Today, driven by the Cameroon Digital Transformation Acceleration Project and thanks to the crucial support of the World Bank, a true digital revolution is redefining agricultural productivity, transforming yesterday’s challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth.

At the heart of this transformative dynamic, the PATNUC project is deploying a large-scale strategy to broaden digital inclusion and scale up the use of technological tools adapted to real-world conditions. By investing heavily in connectivity, digital literacy, and data management, the project directly addresses the obstacles hindering farm development. The impact is already being felt on the ground through an innovative electronic voucher system, which allows 35,000 smallholder farmers to access high-quality inputs, such as improved seeds and targeted fertilizers.

Simultaneously, digital applications provide crucial real-time data on soil health and agronomic conditions. This synergy between technology and traditional know-how is leading to spectacular prospects, with projected yield increases of up to 100 percent for key crops. Far from being a mere technological gimmick, digital technology is proving to be the true key to self-sufficiency and resilience in value chains.

The Agritech Innovation Challenge, a springboard for local startups

One of the most powerful catalysts for this transformation remains the Agritech Innovation Challenge, a flagship initiative that bridges the gap between the inventiveness of young entrepreneurs and the concrete needs of farmers. This national competition showcases cutting-edge digital solutions, from marketing platforms to climate decision-making tools. Selected startups benefit from tailored support, including mentorship, technical and financial assistance, and direct connections with farmers’ groups to test and refine their innovations in real-world conditions.

The results of this collaborative approach speak for themselves. Platforms like eFarm.cm perfectly illustrate this mission by directly connecting producers with

buyers, thereby expanding market opportunities and drastically reducing post-harvest losses. Similarly, poultry farmers are witnessing a complete transformation of their operations, as exemplified by Eliboy Fortune Farms, where e-marketing has tripled weekly production and sales volumes. What was once a major commercial obstacle has become the primary driver of sustained economic growth.

A smart financing model for lasting impact

To ensure the widespread adoption of these innovations, the project leverages appropriate financial instruments, such as the $4.4 million in matching grants awarded by the PATNUC. By covering up to two-thirds of the acquisition costs for farmer groups, this facility alleviates cash flow constraints while stimulating genuine demand for digital services.

By aligning itself with the global AgriConnect initiative, which aims to transform the livelihoods of 300 million farmers by the end of the decade, Cameroon is not simply importing pre-existing models. The country is actively participating in their testing and refinement, establishing itself as an open-air laboratory for smart agriculture in Africa. By promoting youth employment, the emergence of high-performing incubators, and financial inclusion, this digital transformation is making agriculture a highly attractive, modern sector with a promising future for rising generations.
