Driven by superior athletic intensity and goals from Songue and Manguele, the “Lionceaux” demonstrated their physical resilience against an Elite Two side.
As the 2026 UNIFFAC Tournament approaches, Cameroon’s national men’s U-20 team is fine-tuning its cohesion. As part of this intensive preparation, the « Lionceaux Indomptables » (Indomitable Lion Cubs) secured a valuable 2-1 victory over the formidable Elite Two club, Sable FC de Batié, on September 28. Played on the demanding pitch of the CAF Center of Excellence in Mbankomo, this warm-up match highlighted a decisive factor in the success of Yvan Kenmoe’s squad: athletic dominance and impact.
Beyond technical skill and individual flair, it was physical commitment, tenacity in duels, and sustained effort over the full ninety minutes that allowed the young internationals to make the difference.
A strong start defined by athletic impact
The tone was set right from kickoff. Facing a seasoned Elite Two side like Sable FC de Batié required an immediate step up in terms of robustness and intensity. The Cameroonian U-20s rose to the challenge, matching the physical pressure imposed by their experienced opponents.
Successfully meeting this challenge in midfield allowed them to dictate the tempo of the game. In the 17th minute, this territorial and athletic dominance paid off with the opening goal: Joachim Songue, perfectly positioned at the edge of the penalty area, coolly finished with a low drive into the bottom corner.
However, top-level football is unforgiving of any drop in intensity. After dominating proceedings for the first half-hour, the *Lion Cubs* experienced a brief spell of vulnerability. A slight lapse in concentration and a flawed defensive retreat in the 31st minute allowed Sable FC de Batié to level the score just before the break. It served as a timely wake-up call for the coaching staff regarding the physical and mental demands of elite-level play.
Physical superiority: the cornerstone of the second half
Upon returning from the dressing room, coach Yvan Kenmoe made tactical adjustments, emphasizing the need to push beyond limits and increase the volume of play. The second half highlighted the U-20s’ athletic superiority, as they maintained constant pressure and stifled their opponents in midfield.
It was precisely this physical freshness and sheer determination that broke the deadlock in the 67th minute. Manguele Popess restored his team’s lead (2–1) with a superbly executed free-kick. While the goal was a technical masterpiece, it was made possible by fouls drawn through the Cameroonian attackers’ relentless forward runs and agility, which tormented the Batié defense. Although the scoreline could have been more emphatic evidenced by two clear-cut chances missed by Mbog Camille in the final fifteen minutes due to a momentary lapse in composure at the crucial moment the attacking unit relentlessly harried the opposing defense, confirming an excellent level of athletic preparation.
Towards UNIFFAC 2026: A mindset praised by the coaching staff
After the match, head coach Yvan Kenmoe was quick to commend his squad’s positive attitude, fighting spirit, and tactical discipline. In a sub-regional competition like UNIFFAC where physicality, duels, and repeated high-intensity efforts at a breakneck pace often dictate the game this outing in Mbankomo served as an ideal testing ground.
This narrow yet highly instructive victory demonstrates that the U-20 Lions possess the necessary foundations. By fostering this athletic rigor and collective high standards, Cameroon is moving resolutely toward its continental goals, equipped with the tools needed to shine.
