Crowned African kickboxing champions on home soil with a historic record of 40 medals (including 16 gold), Cameroon crushed the competition in Mfandéna. This unprecedented feat was driven by the emergence of a new generation of athletes and, above all, by elite medical care, the secret to this physical performance.

The Cameroonian athletes did their fans proud.

The Mfandéna multi-sports gymnasium will remember this for a long time. From June 21 to 27, the Cameroonian capital throbbed to the rhythm of the 11th African Kickboxing Championships. After a week of exceptionally intense fights, the national team capped off its journey in style at a closing ceremony presided over by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Sports, Joseph Yerima. The results are masterful: with 40 medals (16 gold, 21 silver, 3 bronze), Cameroon climbed to the top of the continental podium, ahead of Madagascar (20 medals) and South Africa (24 medals).

While the talent of the 130 athletes from 11 nations provided a spectacular show, particularly with the introduction of tatami events and the emergence of 7- to 8-year-old prodigies, this historic haul hides an open secret: invisible but crucial preparation, masterfully led by the medical staff.

The secret weapon: health at the heart of performance

For Emmanuel Essissima, president of the Cameroonian Kickboxing Federation, these results far exceed the initial objective of surpassing the 9 titles of the previous edition. This qualitative leap is explained by a revolution in the training and support provided to the fighters. In kickboxing, an extreme striking sport, injury management determines longevity in the tournament.

The Cameroonian medical staff implemented a meticulous monitoring system. Before the competition, a complete biological and postural assessment identified each athlete’s weaknesses. During the seven days of competition, the recovery protocol puts the highest professional standards: cryotherapy sessions (cold therapy) to reduce inflammation, immediate post-fight relaxation massages, and strict hydro-electrolytic rehydration to counteract the heat stress of the Mfandena gymnasium. “The fights followed one another at a frantic pace,” confided a member of the technical staff. « Without immediate treatment of micro-traumas, contusions, and muscle fatigue between rounds, our athletes would never have been

able to withstand the intensity of the finals in the ring and on the mats. »

A model for the international future

This individualized monitoring not only optimized the performance of the senior athletes but also protected the physical well-being of the younger generation, whose growing skeletons require extra vigilance. By preventing major injuries and accelerating cell regeneration, the « Lions of the Tatami » were able to compete at 100% of their physical capacity in every round, while their opponents were losing steam. Strengthened by this undeniable continental victory, backed by a now well-established medical expertise, Cameroon is ambitiously setting its sights on the next World Championships. The momentum is building, and Cameroon’s strengths are as much physical as they are scientific.
