As the knockout stage gets underway in North America, a toxic guest has crashed the party: a historic heat wave. Between stifling heat domes and pitches transformed into ovens, athlete safety is severely tested, forcing FIFA to arbitrate between commercial imperatives and physical integrity.
The thermometer reads 39°C in the shade, but on the pitch, humidity climbs to 75%. The WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) index, which combines heat, radiation, and humidity, is nearing the critical threshold of 32°C. At this level, sports medicine speaks not of discomfort, but of life-threatening danger. Welcome to the 2026 World Cup, a massive competition co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, where the main adversary for the forty-eight teams is no longer tactical, but climatic.
The Human Machine Pushed to Its Physiological Limits
Running ten kilometers in sweltering heat profoundly alters the physiology of footballers. To eliminate excessive internal heat, the body activates a massive thermoregulation mechanism: blood is redirected primarily to the skin to be cooled by perspiration. This vital process comes at the expense of skeletal striated muscles, which are abruptly deprived of some of their oxygen and essential nutrients.
The result on the pitch is immediate. Endurance plummets, the heart rate races, and dehydration, which can reach four liters per player, causes a loss of tissue elasticity. Muscle tears, strains, and widespread cramps multiply after just one hour of play. Beyond the muscles, it’s the mind that becomes clouded. FIFA’s conundrum: between air conditioning and television screens
Faced with this planned threat, the international governing body’s logistical responses are showing their limitations.
