Governor launches mother and child health nutrition action week in the North West Region.
Bamenda, July 9, 2026, the Governor of the North West Region officially launched the 2026 Mother and Child Health Nutrition Action Week (MCHNAW) during a high-level advocacy meeting held at the conference hall of the Regional Delegation of Public Works in Bamenda.
The advocacy meeting, chaired by the Governor, brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including the representative of the North West Regional Assembly, the Mayor of Bamenda City, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Mezam, security officials, traditional and religious authorities, media professionals, development partners, and senior officials of the Regional Delegation of Public Health.
In his opening presentation, the North West Regional Delegate of Public Health outlined the context and rationale for the campaign, emphasizing the importance of strengthening child survival and nutrition interventions across the region. He reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing childhood illnesses and malnutrition through integrated public health services.
The Regional Coordinator of the Nutrition Programme, Mr. Ignatius Asongwe, subsequently presented the region’s level of preparedness for the campaign. He highlighted the key interventions to be implemented, the operational strategies to reach target populations, the crucial role of Vitamin A supplementation in preventing childhood illnesses and blindness among children aged 6–59 months, and the expected outcomes of the campaign.
The presentations were followed by an interactive discussion session moderated by
the Governor, during which participants exchanged views on strategies to ensure the success of the campaign throughout the region.
Officially launching the campaign, the Governor called on all stakeholders to demonstrate greater commitment during implementation. He urged administrative authorities, traditional and religious leaders, community leaders, and development partners to mobilize their respective communities, while encouraging media professionals to use their platforms to disseminate accurate and timely information on the campaign.
To symbolize the commencement of the exercise, the Governor administered Vitamin A supplements to a number of children, who became the first beneficiaries of the 2026 Mother and Child Health Nutrition Action Week in the North West Region.
The campaign aims to increase Vitamin A supplementation coverage among children under five years of age while promoting other essential maternal and child health and nutrition interventions across all 21 health districts of the North West Region.
