In response to a rise in Mpox cases, the health district and UNICEF trained 15 community health workers on July 28, 2026, to strengthen prevention, detection, and field response.
Faced with the resurgence of suspected cases of monkeypox in several local health zones, the Buea health district is taking proactive measures. On July 28, 2026, under the close supervision of the Regional Delegation of Public Health for the Southwest and with strategic support from UNICEF, a strategic training and awareness session was held for 15 community health workers (CHWs) and district health personnel. Led by the head of the Buea health district, this interactive meeting addresses a public health imperative: stopping the chain of virus transmission by working closely with the population. Participants benefited from in-depth capacity building covering basic virology, modes of transmission, early symptom recognition, and rigorous preventive measures.
Emphasis was also placed on mastering reporting and early warning tools. By equipping these field professionals with up-to-date diagnostic and communication skills, health authorities ensure the rapid detection of suspected cases, essential for limiting the spread of the epidemic in a densely populated region.
Debunking rumors and training health ambassadors
Beyond the purely medical aspect, this session stood out for its participatory approach. Community health workers were able to share their field experiences and directly address a major obstacle during epidemics: misinformation. By deconstructing misconceptions and local myths surrounding Mpox, the training prepares these workers to engage in constructive and reassuring dialogue with families.
At the end of the workshop, each participant received a comprehensive kit of risk communication materials (RCCE) and awareness-raising tools. Now trained and equipped, these 15 workers become true health ambassadors within their respective communities. Their mission will be to conduct door-to-door visits, promote hand hygiene, refer patients to appropriate facilities, and maintain constant vigilance.
