Often kept close at night for convenience, the smartphone can become a source of heat, sleep disturbance and distraction when placed under a pillow. A few simple habits can help reduce these risks.
When the phone cannot cool down
Under a pillow, a phone has little room to release the heat it produces, especially when it is charging. Bedding can trap this heat around the device, causing its temperature to rise. This can affect the battery and, in exceptional circumstances, increase the risk of overheating.
The situation is even more concerning when the phone is connected to a charger. Charging already produces heat, while the pillow prevents proper ventilation. For this reason, a phone should never be charged under a pillow, blanket or mattress. It is safer to place it on a hard, uncovered surface where air can circulate freely.
A phone that disturbs sleep
The danger is not limited to overheating. Keeping a smartphone under the pillow also puts it within immediate reach of notifications, calls and vibrations.
Even brief interruptions can affect the continuity of sleep. A person may wake up to check a message, look at the time or respond to a notification before trying to fall asleep again. Repeated disturbances can gradually affect the quality of nighttime rest.
The screen can keep the brain awake
Having the phone close also encourages late-night scrolling. A quick check of social media or messages can easily turn into several minutes of screen time.
The light from the screen, combined with stimulating content, can make it harder to wind down before sleeping. Checking the phone repeatedly during the night can also reinforce a habit that keeps the brain alert instead of allowing it to settle into rest.
A better place for the phone
The simplest solution is to keep the smartphone on a bedside table or another stable surface away from the bed. Anyone using it as an alarm can place it far enough away to avoid reaching for it automatically during the night.
Activating the “Do Not Disturb” mode can also limit unnecessary interruptions. And if the phone needs to be charged overnight, it should be connected to a suitable charger and placed on a hard, uncovered surface, away from bedding.
Sleeping without a phone tucked under the pillow is therefore more than a question of comfort. It is a simple precaution that can help protect the device, reduce nighttime distractions and create better conditions for restful sleep.
