Since the beginning of August 2026, the teams of the ALFA SANED association have been increasing their outreach activities in several neighborhoods of Maroua in order to raise awareness among the population about cholera prevention measures.

Faced with the risk of cholera spreading during this rainy season, the ALFA SANED association is continuing its commitment to community health. Since the beginning of August, its teams have been mobilized in the field to raise awareness among the population about essential preventative measures. This community-based campaign is part of a broader effort to strengthen health vigilance within the most vulnerable communities. Aïssatou Mahamat, a resident of the Toupouri neighborhood, said: “With the rains, we are always afraid of illness. The explanations given by the volunteers helped us understand that simple actions, such as regularly washing our hands with soap and drinking clean water, can protect the whole family. We are going to put this advice into practice.”

The final stage of this mobilization took the association’s volunteers to the Toupouri neighborhood, located in the Domayo area of Maroua. There, they met with residents, community leaders, and several families to provide them with practical information on how to prevent cholera, a waterborne disease whose risks

increase considerably during the rainy season.

Throughout the campaign, volunteers emphasized simple but essential actions: regular handwashing with soap, drinking only clean or properly treated water, systematically washing fruits and vegetables, cooking food thoroughly, using clean latrines, and regularly maintaining the environment. Residents were also urged to avoid open defecation, keep their homes clean, and seek immediate medical attention at a health center if symptoms such as acute diarrhea or vomiting appeared. Moussa Oumarou, head of household in Domayo-Toupouri, said: “This campaign is very timely. Many people are still unaware of the early signs of cholera and the appropriate actions to take. We thank ALFA SANED for coming to us. We will raise awareness among our neighbors so that everyone participates in keeping our neighborhood clean and preventing this disease.”

Beyond prevention messages, this activity was marked by direct exchanges with residents. Volunteers addressed the numerous concerns expressed by local people regarding the risks of contamination, protective measures to adopt within households, and the appropriate actions to take in case of suspected cholera. This participatory approach helped to strengthen understanding of the messages and promote their adoption by the communities.

For ALFA SANED, the fight against cholera hinges first and foremost on prevention and community empowerment. By increasing its field visits, the organization aims to bring public health messages closer to citizens so that everyone can fully play their part in protecting their family and community. Organization leaders believe that local information dissemination remains one of the most effective ways to limit the spread of waterborne diseases.

The residents of Toupouri welcomed this initiative, which they consider useful in the current context. Many expressed their satisfaction at receiving advice directly in their neighborhood, promising to put the recommendations into practice and share them with their families and friends.

The association reaffirms its commitment to making a lasting contribution to improving community health, by focusing on information, prevention and the active participation of the population.
