Armed with advanced skills in strategic communication, association management and resilience tools against gender violence, these exceptional women now form an interconnected and bilingual national network, ready to meet the challenges of local development.
“We leave transformed, not only by the knowledge we have gained, but by the certainty that our voice matters and that our commitment can shape the future of our communities.” With these heartfelt words, one of the 19 graduates of the Civil Society Women’s Leadership Academy summed up the essence of this unique and enriching human experience. After several months of intensive training that began in August 2025, these women from across Cameroon received their certificates, recognizing their acquisition of exceptional new skills, at a formal ceremony presided over by the Minister for the Promotion of Women and the Family (MINPROFF), Marie-Thérèse Abena Ondoa. MINPROFF officials were present at the closing ceremony, demonstrating the strategic importance the Cameroonian government places on the training and empowerment of women leaders in civil society. In her official closing remarks, the Minister for the Promotion of Women and the Family offered a vibrant exhortation to the candidates, commending their determination and resilience throughout this demanding journey. She proudly emphasized that these women now represent the vanguard of a new generation of female leadership, capable of addressing the complex challenges facing their respective communities. The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cameroon, Katrin Friedrichs, also spoke, reaffirming her country’s unwavering commitment to Cameroon in promoting gender equality and strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations. Her speech recalled that this project, initiated by GIZ through the Civil Society Organizations Strengthening and Gender Inclusivity Project (PROSICG), embodies a shared vision of a future where women fully occupy their place in spheres of decision-making and influence.
An exceptional quantitative and qualitative assessment
The presentation of the academy’s statistics highlighted the scope and richness of
this impactful training program. Twelve regions of Cameroon were involved in this initiative, demonstrating the project’s national reach and its ability to connect with all segments of the country. Nineteen candidates registered and diligently participated in the five workshops and training programs offered. These sessions were structured around twelve themes and training modules, covering a broad and complementary range of essential skills for women’s leadership. Among the newly acquired skills, the participants developed advanced expertise in strategic communication, enabling them to effectively represent their organizations and advocate for women’s rights with eloquence and persuasion. Training in meditation and personal development provided them with valuable tools to cultivate inner resilience and maintain psychological balance in the face of the pressures of activism within associations. The fight against gender-based violence (GBV) was approached from a practical perspective, equipping these women with legal and psychosocial expertise to support victims and advocate for more protective public policies.
The organization and management of associations have been strengthened through innovative methods that allow them to structure their organizations sustainably. Community engagement, the cornerstone of civic leadership, has been deepened through participatory approaches that place beneficiaries at the heart of local development processes. Determination, that inner strength that enables them to overcome obstacles, has been cultivated as a skill in its own right, as has economic empowerment, which now provides them with the tools to initiate income-generating projects within their communities.
Sixty-four learning methods were deployed to ensure a diverse pedagogy adapted to the varied profiles of the participants. The entire training was conducted bilingually, reflecting the linguistic richness of Cameroon and preparing these leaders to thrive in international environments. Two babies were welcomed into this cohort, a powerful symbol that motherhood and professional ambition can coexist harmoniously when the support structures are appropriate. The level of laughter and camaraderie was recorded at one hundred percent, testifying to the spirit of solidarity and kindness that characterized this group throughout its journey. Finally, the inspiration generated by this experience was described as boundless, as these women are now driven by creative energy and a vision for the future.
A symbolic presentation of certificates
The solemn moment of the Minister’s presentation of certificates to the candidates marked the culmination of the ceremony. Each recipient, called forward in turn, received from the Minister the valuable document attesting to her newfound leadership skills. This gesture, imbued with official recognition, sealed the culmination of months of effort and sacrifice. Following this, the Director of Women’s Social Promotion at MINPROFF presented additional certificates,
emphasizing the commitment of the entire ministry to these exceptional women.
The ceremony concluded in an atmosphere of joy and unity with a traditional group photo bringing together the authorities, technical and financial partners, trainers, and the nineteen graduates. This image, beyond capturing the moment, immortalizes the birth of a dynamic network of women leaders ready to transform their communities and inspire the next generation. Through this first graduating class, the Civil Society Women’s Leadership Academy has etched its name in the history of gender equality in Cameroon as a catalyst for talent and an incubator of women’s civic engagement.
