Thanks to the successful rehabilitation of strategic equipment at the Akomnyada plant, the Cameroonian capital now benefits from an additional supply of 38,000 m³ of drinking water.
One hundred and thirty thousand cubic meters of drinking water per day. This figure, now a reality for the Cameroonian capital, marks a decisive step in the fight against the water shortage that regularly affects Yaoundé and its surrounding areas. Thanks to the successful rehabilitation of strategic equipment at the Akomnyada water treatment plant, the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation (CAMWATER) has reached a historic milestone in improving the city’s water supply, which translates into a better life for millions of households. The rehabilitation work on the 1,250 HP vertical pump at the Akomnyada water treatment plant has just been successfully completed. After a rigorous process including workshop reconditioning, transfer to site, mechanical reassembly, electrical connection, oil filling, adjustments and successful technical tests, the teams from the Works and Maintenance Directorate (DTM), in close collaboration with the Special Production Sector of Akomnyada, the Yaoundé Agglomeration Regional Division (DIVRY) and the partner SNEF Cameroon, proceeded to put the third pumping station towards Yaoundé back into service.
A significantly increased production capacity
The Akomnyada plant is now operating with three pumping stations supplying water to the capital, increasing its production capacity to nearly 130,000 cubic
meters of drinking water per day, an increase of approximately 38,000 cubic meters. This increase in capacity represents a major step forward in strengthening Yaoundé’s drinking water supply and improving the continuity of service for the population. The 130,000 cubic meters produced daily now cover a much larger portion of the capital’s water needs, significantly reducing water outages and strain on the network.
The CEO’s vision in action
On this occasion, the Director General of CAMWATER, Dr. Blaise Moussa, visited the Akomnyada production plant to personally observe the completion of the work and the recommissioning of this strategic facility. This visit reflects the importance placed by the General Management on the sustainable strengthening of drinking water production capacity for the capital.
A response to Yaoundé’s water challenges
The city of Yaoundé, experiencing sustained population growth, has seen its drinking water needs increase exponentially in recent years. Periods of drought and peak consumption regularly put a strain on a distribution network that was sometimes saturated. With this increased capacity of 130,000 cubic meters per day, CAMWATER offers a concrete solution to these challenges, securing the capital’s water supply and improving the quality of service for all users.
This achievement illustrates the vision of the Director General, Dr. Blaise Moussa, for the modernization of production infrastructure, as well as the commitment and professionalism of CAMWATER’s technical teams, mobilized to sustainably improve the performance of strategic facilities and guarantee more reliable access to drinking water.
