Using toothpicks daily tends to do more harm than good. These small, often wooden sticks can be quite bothersome for teeth. Oral health specialists recommend caution when using them.

Toothpicks, small sticks, are a common sight in households, restaurants, and other food establishments. They are often used as a tool to help with eating certain foods, requiring the user to pinch them to guide them into the mouth. The most common example is the consumption of braised meat, known locally as « soya. » It is in this context that the use of toothpicks becomes widespread. They are found in all establishments serving braised meat. In fact, it is within this context that they are well-known and widely used. Toothpicks are also used for other purposes, and this is where concerns arise. These small sticks are used to clean teeth. Indeed, after consuming food that has left debris stuck in their teeth, people who suffer from this situation resort to using toothpicks, and this is a very common practice. However, using toothpicks to clean teeth is not without risk to oral health. These sticks, inserted through the teeth, injure the gums and leave gaps between the teeth. This leads to bleeding gums and opens the door to infections. Numerous ailments can arise under these conditions. Oral health specialists strongly encourage the use of dental floss instead of toothpicks. Dental floss is suitable for cleaning teeth clogged with food debris. However, its cultivation is not widely known and it is not accessible to everyone because it is primarily sold in pharmacies.

People, concerned about avoiding damage to their teeth and protecting them from bleeding problems, should use toothpicks with great care. They should not be the first option when food particles are felt in the teeth. Even when toothpicks are the only available option, they must be used very gently and cautiously. Parents and guardians should also be urged not to leave these tools unsupervised in the hands of children, who are often unaware of the potential harm hidden behind their seemingly useful appearance.

Toothpicks are tools designed to remove food debris stuck between teeth, especially after a meal. Their use is intended for practical purposes, particularly when a toothbrush or dental floss isn’t readily available. However, the repeated and often overly forceful insertion of the pick can irritate and injure the gums, causing bleeding or inflammation, widen the spaces between teeth, which promotes the accumulation of new debris and the formation of plaque, contribute to gum recession in the long term, and weaken the contact points between teeth. The use of toothpicks should remain occasional, gentle, and cautious. They can be used on occasion… but it’s preferable to use dental floss, which allows for deep cleaning of interdental spaces without trauma, interdental brushes, designed for wider spaces, and of course, regular brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. In short, the toothpick should be seen as a backup solution, not as a daily hygiene tool.
