South Africa’s environmental and health authorities have formalized a new partnership aimed at strengthening evidence-based responses to air pollution, a growing driver of disease and premature death across the country.
South Africa’s South African Medical Research Council and Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment have signed an MoU to strengthen joint research and policy action on air pollution, aiming to better protect public health through science-driven environmental decision-making.
The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration between environmental scientists and public health researchers. The agreement is designed to improve understanding of how air pollution affects human health and to ensure that environmental policy is guided by robust scientific evidence.
In a joint statement released on Sunday, both institutions described the partnership as a significant step toward integrating environmental management with health outcomes. The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation across several areas, including joint research, policy development, health impact assessments, data sharing, air quality monitoring, and public awareness campaigns.
Air pollution remains one of the leading environmental health risks globally, linked to a wide range of conditions such as respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and premature mortality. In South Africa, exposure is often uneven, with communities located near industrial zones, power generation facilities, major transport routes, and densely populated informal settlements facing higher risks.
Through this collaboration, the SAMRC and DFFE aim to generate more precise evidence on the sources and health impacts of emissions. The partnership will also support improved surveillance systems for pollution-related health outcomes and enhance access to environmental data for epidemiological research. Another key objective is the development of early warning systems to alert vulnerable populations during periods of poor air quality.
Officials from both institutions emphasized that the agreement is intended to translate scientific knowledge into practical interventions. Maesela Kekana, Deputy
Director-General for Climate Change and Air Quality Management at the DFFE, said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to safeguarding both environmental integrity and public health. He noted that strengthening the scientific basis of air quality policies would help ensure that interventions deliver measurable health benefits.
From the health research side, SAMRC President and CEO Professor Ntobeko Ntusi highlighted the broader public health implications of air pollution. He said the burden of disease linked to environmental exposure represents a major societal challenge, requiring coordinated action between disciplines. According to him, the partnership is expected to produce evidence that can guide policymakers toward interventions with the greatest potential impact, while also addressing health inequalities.
As the SAMRC operates as the health research arm of the National Department of Health, the MoU also opens avenues for closer coordination with other government structures working on climate change and environmental health.
Both institutions underscored that the collaboration aligns with South Africa’s broader sustainable development goals. By embedding health considerations into environmental decision-making, the partnership aims to ensure that air quality management not only protects ecosystems but also directly improves health outcomes for communities nationwide.
