Chromolaena odorata, artemisia and the king of herbs help to treat fevers and malaria thanks to their fever-reducing and antiparasitic properties.
In Cameroon, malaria remains a major public health problem, heavily impacting the daily lives of millions of families and the national health system. Although the morbidity rate has gradually decreased to 25.9%, vigilance remains essential. This particularly virulent and potentially fatal infectious disease is caused by microscopic parasites of the genus Plasmodium. It is transmitted to humans primarily through the nocturnal bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes.
In its classic form, malaria manifests as sudden and severe fever, accompanied by intense chills, throbbing headaches, generalized body aches, and various digestive problems such as nausea or vomiting. Without prompt and appropriate medical attention, the disease can rapidly progress to serious complications. Faced with this constant threat, traditional medicine offers an age-old remedy deeply rooted in local cultural heritage: the use of a specific decoction combining Chromolaena odorata, commonly known as Laotian herb, artemisia, and Ageratum conyzoides, better known by the evocative name « king of herbs. » « As a decoction, these plants help fight malaria. Simply take half a glass morning and evening for 21 days, » explains Dr. Laurent Abaya, a naturopath.
An age-old trio with impressive virtues
This trio of plants combines complementary pharmacological properties to support the body weakened by infection. Recognized worldwide for its natural richness in artemisinin and powerful antioxidant compounds, artemisia is traditionally used to rapidly reduce fever and neutralize the malaria parasite in the blood. Its purified extracts also form the essential scientific basis for the production of the most effective modern antimalarial drugs.
Chromolaena odorata, for its part, offers remarkable anti-inflammatory, healing, and antimicrobial properties. It is frequently used in therapeutic steam baths or
consumed as concentrated herbal teas to soothe bodily inflammation and boost energy. Finally, this king of herbs effectively relieves stomach aches, purifies the body by promoting the elimination of metabolic toxins, and strengthens overall immunity against repeated infections.
Usage tips and vigilance
Although this approach relies on entirely natural plant resources, public health experts and practitioners strongly emphasize that using herbal teas made from raw, unprocessed plants presents real risks. The variation in the concentration of active ingredients depending on the season and traditional preparation methods results in an uncertain dosage that cannot replace official antimalarial treatments recommended by health authorities. Therefore, it is particularly important to seek advice from a qualified professional before using this traditional remedy.
In addition, daily prevention focused on the systematic use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets and the application of repellents remains the best protection against the disease.
The combination of Chromolaena odorata, artemisia, and the king of herbs has been used in traditional medicine for generations to help combat malaria. However, this natural remedy should be seen as a complementary support, as in cases of suspicious or severe symptoms, seeking medical attention should always be the first course of action.
