With the return of the rains, as everyone rushes to take shelter from the storm, a completely different scene unfolds beneath our feet. Deep within the cities, sewage systems, drains, and septic tanks are filling up at an alarming rate. For cockroaches and other insects, the driving rain transforms their natural shelters into death traps. Panicked by the risk of drowning, these insects launch a mass upward exodus.

Sinks, shower drains, pipes, and even the smallest cracks in the walls become their preferred entry points into our homes. Attracted by the constant heat of appliances and the ambient humidity that meets their vital need for water, they invade our kitchens and bathrooms. While we often tend to become accustomed to their presence as soon as the weather turns bad, this tolerance is a serious mistake. Allowing these insects to proliferate in the home poses a major health risk to the entire family.

An often overlooked danger

Dr. Mawaguia is sounding the alarm about what he calls a “neglected health risk.” Too often dismissed as a mere household nuisance, the cockroach is, in fact, a formidable vector of pathogens. And for good reason: its lifestyle is intrinsically linked to the most unsanitary environments. Before crossing into our living spaces, these insects spend approximately twelve hours a day confined amidst garbage, toilets, sewers, and septic tanks. As Dr. Mawaguia explains, « The cockroach contaminates food and surfaces with its legs and droppings. » The insect’s journey is chilling: it leaves the septic tank, travels up the drainpipe, enters the kitchen, climbs

onto the bag of rice, crawls across clean dishes, and ultimately contaminates our meals directly.

A single cockroach is enough to carry thousands of bacteria, which it deposits as it moves about. Even worse, the insect regurgitates and defecates directly onto food. “Its droppings contain live bacteria for several days,” the expert emphasizes. It is this mechanical transport of microbes that triggers dangerous fecal-oral infections.

Many households mistakenly believe they are protected by adopting good food hygiene habits. But the doctor dispels this false sense of security: « Yes, you drink mineral water, you wash your fruit, but you’ve neglected the cockroaches that linger on your dishes. » In just a few hours of nocturnal wandering on our kitchen utensils, these pests ruin all our efforts at hygiene.

The diseases transmitted through this mechanical contamination are as numerous as they are severe. Contact with contaminated surfaces exposes us to typhoid fever, bacillary dysentery caused by Shigella bacteria, as well as multiple forms of food poisoning and acute diarrhea linked to E. coli bacteria. Parasites are also a significant threat: amoebiasis directly threatens our health, as the cysts of Entamoeba histolytica can survive for up to twelve hours in the cockroach’s intestine. Furthermore, the eggs of intestinal worms such as roundworms, pinworms, giardia, or tapeworms remain attached to the insects’ legs and end up being ingested unknowingly, not to mention the numerous allergic reactions and asthma attacks triggered by their bodily remains.

Faced with the return of the rains and this surge in household infestations, inaction is no longer an option. Dr. Mawaguia issues a clear appeal: « Don’t normalize the presence of cockroaches. » To protect our health, the fight against cockroaches must become an absolute priority. Sanitizing your environment, sealing cracks, blocking drain openings, and protecting all food are essential steps to definitively cut off these dangerous disease vectors.
