Although pregnancy is a natural process, it can also be accompanied by serious complications. Recognizing warning signs early helps prevent risks for both the mother and the baby.
At the slightest alarming symptom, the mother should consult her gynecologist or midwife.
Staying alert throughout pregnancy
Pregnancy is a delicate period for both the mother and the baby. In many cases, complications can occur unexpectedly. In a context where rapid access to healthcare is not always guaranteed, it is important for mothers to know how to identify warning signs, even those that may seem minor. Taking prompt action can make a difference and allow urgent situations to be managed quickly.
Bleeding and pain
Bleeding during pregnancy, regardless of the stage, should always be taken seriously. It may indicate a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, or a problem with the placenta. Similarly, severe or persistent abdominal pain is not normal and requires prompt medical attention.
Frequent headaches and blurred vision
During pregnancy, severe and frequent headaches that persist even after adequate rest should be considered a warning sign. If these headaches are accompanied by blurred vision or the sensation of seeing flashes of light, the mother should be even more concerned, as these symptoms are often associated with pregnancy-related hypertension. This condition, known as pre-eclampsia, can endanger the health of both the baby and the mother if not treated in time.
Fever and infections
A fever in a pregnant woman may be a sign of a urinary tract infection, malaria, or another illness. Consulting a midwife or gynecologist as soon as possible is the best course of action because, if left untreated, some infections can lead to premature
birth.
Reduced baby movements
At a certain stage of pregnancy, particularly from the second trimester onwards, regular fetal movements are a sign that the baby is doing well. The baby should move regularly, with noticeable activity increasing as pregnancy progresses. If the baby moves less than usual or stops moving despite stimulation from the mother, it is important to go to a health facility as soon as possible for a medical examination and ultrasound.
Swelling and shortness of breath
Sudden swelling of the hands, feet, or face can be a warning sign and may indicate high blood pressure, although some swelling in these areas can be common during pregnancy. However, when swelling is accompanied by shortness of breath or extreme fatigue, urgent medical advice is necessary.
The importance of medical follow-up
From the first months of pregnancy, it is important to receive regular care from a gynecologist or midwife. Monthly prenatal visits allow the mother to ask questions whenever she has concerns and enable healthcare providers to detect and manage possible complications as early as possible.
