As a new administrative chapter opens at the Bamenda Regional Hospital with the installation of Dr. Sama Julius Nkam, it is time to reflect on the legacy of his predecessor, Dr. Denis Nsame Nforba. In the midst of an extremely challenging security and health environment, this exceptional leader transformed a turbulent institution into a sanctuary of humanity, medical neutrality, and technical excellence.

A sanctuary open 24/7 in the heart of the Anglophone crisis.

Leading a major hospital in Northwest Cameroon in recent years has been a constant challenge in the face of human suffering and socio-political tensions. In a region ravaged by a devastating armed conflict, where fear and blockades constantly threatened to disrupt access to basic healthcare, Dr. Denis Nsame Nforba stood as an unwavering guarantor of the continuity of public health services.

Under his visionary leadership, the Bamenda Regional Hospital never closed its doors. Against all odds, the facility remained operational 24/7. Dr. Nsame elevated the universal principle of medical neutrality to the status of a sacred dogma: whether civilians caught in the crossfire, internally displaced persons who had lost everything, or severely wounded war veterans, every patient found a compassionate refuge, receiving impartial care in accordance with the most demanding ethical standards. “Keeping a hospital open day and night amidst the fighting was not a matter of chance, but of absolute moral commitment to the dignity of every human life,” he declared.

The Health Shield Against the Covid-19 Storm

As if the security crisis weren’t enough, the global surge of the Covid-19 pandemic placed even more pressure on already strained infrastructure. Faced with this unprecedented double threat, Dr. Nsame’s foresight and tactical rigor made all the difference.

Under his direct leadership, an isolation and emergency care center meeting international standards was swiftly established. His teams, galvanized by his example of composure and on-the-ground presence, managed the health crisis with exemplary professionalism. This capacity for rapid adaptation was also demonstrated during local cholera and measles outbreaks, preventing a collapse of the regional capital’s healthcare system.

Technical Modernization: Avoiding the Ordeal of Evacuations

Aware of the dangers and exorbitant costs of transporting critically ill patients to Douala or Yaoundé during periods of insecurity on the roads, Dr. Nsame spearheaded an unprecedented technological transformation. The operating theaters, emergency department, pediatrics, and maternity ward underwent extensive renovations and were equipped with state-of-the-art biomedical equipment. From the modernized medical imaging center to the high-precision analysis laboratories, including the strategic revitalization of the hemodialysis center and the strengthening of the intensive care units, the hospital has raised its diagnostic capabilities to the highest national standards.

Humanizing care and uniting the profession

Beyond the physical infrastructure and equipment, Dr. Denis Nsame Nforba distinguished himself through a profound humanization of the institution. This included the digitization of medical recordsand improved inventory management enabled greater administrative transparency, while the relentless fight against passive corruption restored trust between patients and the medical community.

As the regional representative of the Medical Association/Order of Physicians, he acted as a true unifying figure. He restored collegiality, revived the tradition of fraternal funeral honors, and instilled ethical valuesin younger generations. Striding through the corridors with his legendary elegance and proudly wearing his traditional headdress, Dr. Nsame embodied the harmonious blend of modern scientific rigor and a deep attachment to cultural traditions.

In passing the torch to Dr. Sama Julius Nkam, Dr. Nsame leaves behind the indelible memory of a builder and a protector. His legacy of resilience and selfless service will continue to inspire Cameroonian public health for decades to come.
